October 2, 2015

Dear Moose Community,

Happy October! We have completed our first month of school.  The phrase ‘time is flying by’ doesn’t seem to capture how fast the school year is actually moving.

It was a pleasure to have families join us for Open House on Wednesday evening. Parents and guardians were able to get a glimpse into their student’s engaging and robust life at school.  Special thanks go to the teachers who prepared thoughtful presentations and Ashleigh Pyecroft, Heather Lobenstine, Jessica Carlson-Belanger and Sean Woodard-McNiff for spending some time sharing information during our community meeting. As is often the case, events like Open House remind me of the special and unique school we are so fortunate to have.

Families that attended the Open House received a survey from Superintendent Haggerty. She is trying to gather information to help her finalize her Entry Plan. If you received a survey and have completed it, please send it back to SES with your student. If you have lost it, or did not receive one, we will attach it to the Roadtown this week for your convenience.

At Open House, I also highlighted our school website. We are making a strong effort to ensure that our website is updated and filled with information that you may need. Lunch, After School, School Council (including our School Improvement Plan), School Committee, an updated calendar and Family Handbook information can all be found on the website. Teacher webpages, home resources and staff contact information can also be found. We are also asking for families, if possible, to please pay for lunch/breakfast, After School and pre-school online. You can access this link by clicking on the ‘Parents” tab and choosing ‘Unibank Gold Online Payment’.

At 6:30 on Thursday, October 15th, Superintendent Geryk and the Amherst Regional School District will be having a community listening session regarding the potential 7-12th grade consolidation of the middle and high schools.  This will be an opportunity for the public to provide feedback and ask questions about the issue. This meeting will be held here at Shutesbury Elementary School. I encourage families to attend to become informed or ask questions about this potential change.

We have a busy month ahead filled with various field trips, assemblies and our 2nd annual ‘Vocabulary Costume Day’ on October 30th. We will be sending home more information soon around these exciting events. This is a reminder that there will be no school on October 12th for Columbus Day and October 23rd for a Staff Curriculum Day.

Enjoy October!

Moose Interview of the Week

Bowen from 6th Grade!

JM: What do you like best about SES?

BWM: The teachers. They are kind and fun. Ms. Hermans prances and dances. That is not boring.

JM: What do you want to be when you grow up?

BWM: A football player. It is physical and fun. I want to play for the Denver Broncos.

JM: What is your favorite food?

BWM: Pancakes. My Dad’s pancakes. They are very pancake-y. And there’s a lot of butter in them.

JM: What is your favorite thing about 6th grade?

BWM: Science. I like science and we get to do cool experiments, like time matchbox cars going down ramps.

*We are wondering how many families read the Roadtown News in order to make decisions about how to distribute it in the future.  If you are actually reading this newsletter, please send an email to Jessica ([email protected]) with ‘READ IT!’ in the subject line.   Thank you!
