April Vacation – NO SCHOOL

April 3, 2015

Dear SES Moose,

April is here! Hooray! We have really been enjoying the milder temperatures. This week at school was as busy as always. On April Fools Day, there were many tricks and surprises! Here’s a few photos and list of some of the silly trickery by students and teachers:
  • Covering sensors on computer mice
  • Students wishing us a good afternoon when it was really morning
  • Students saying they don't have to wear glasses any more when they do
  • Hanging the indoor recess sign up when it was outdoor recess
  • Jessica had a fake nail in her finger!
  • A dismissal announcement telling students to bundle up because there was a snowstorm outside
  • Ms. Hermans turning into an alter-ego teacher, Ms. Sparkles—who wears roller skates!
  • Ms. Willis carried a doll as her baby!
  • The 5/6 cubbies had caution tape across them
  • Preschoolers hid under tables when their parents arrived

Grades 3-6 have finished session 1 of PARCC testing. Special kudos goes out to all of the students and staff involved in this endeavor. Students truly displayed great effort and perseverance in their work with a positive attitude. THANKS to the many families who donated tasty snacks as well. Session 2 of PARCC testing will occur mid-May. There will be one less testing session in that round. A detailed testing schedule will be provided to families soon.

Family conferences are coming up! If you have not scheduled a conference with your child’s teacher yet, and you want one, please contact the teacher ASAP. Due to these meetings there are TWO early release days coming up. On Thursday April 9th and Tuesday April 14th students will be dismissed at 1:00pm.

The SES School Council has revised our school survey. We are asking that ALL families, teachers and community members take the survey, so that we are able to get feedback from all members of the SES “Moose” Community. The survey link is available NOW and will be open until April 30th! We will have computers available during conferences for families to use to take the survey as well. Please provide us with your feedback! Here’s the link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SES_School_Council2015

Next week will also be our Spring Book Fair! Students will receive more information around when they are able to purchase books. Thanks to Ms. L for her organization and facilitation of our very popular book fairs!

Have a fabulous weekend,

Jackie Mendonsa

SES Student Interview of the Week!

Cady from First Grade!

M: What do you love about SES?

CR: Ummm. My class. It is so fun and I like math. I really like math because it’s hard for me and sometimes very easy. My teacher Ms. Willis is so nice.

JM: What do you like to do in your spare time?

CR: I like to play with my stuffed animals. I make them go on adventures sometimes. I like to draw and play board and card games.

JM: What do you want to be when you grow up?

CR: A vet. Because I really like animals. Owls, dolphins and penguins are my favorite animals.

***SCHOOL NEWS***

RUN FOR SHUTESBURY SCHOOL COMMITTEE!

Would you like to know more about your child’s education?  Are you willing to be a stakeholder?  The Shutesbury School Committee would like you to serve.   The school committee reviews the school budget, serves as a liaison between parents, residents and the school administration and is in charge of school policies and goals.

There is an open position on the SSC.  At this point, the candidate would have to be written in on the ballot at Town Meeting on Saturday, May 2, 2015.  If you would like to run, please inform the Town Clerk and advise the school committee as well.

The SPRING Book Fair is Coming!

Our Scholastic Book Fair brings to school an exciting selection of fun, engaging, and affordable books kids want to read. Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose their own books motivates them to read more. The Book Fair provides funds for our library, too! Once again our Spring Book Fair overlaps with parent conferences.

Book Fair Dates:             Monday, April 6th to Friday, April 10th

Shopping Hours:             8:30-4:00 (Shop before or after your parent conference!)

Family Event:  Wednesday, April 8th from 5:30-7:30
