March 12, 2015

Dear SES Moose,

With the time change and the warmer temperatures, it certainly feels like we have turned the corner into spring-like weather. Students and staff have enjoyed getting outside in the fresh air and watching all the snow begin to melt!

Last week, students in grades 4-6 participated in many fun MCBA events. Our wonderful librarian, Ms. Lobenstine facilitated and organized a fabulous Battle of the Books event. The winning Battle of the Books team included Carlos, Josh, Will and Casey! The classroom with the most amount of points earned from all MCBA events was the 4th grade! On Friday, March, 6th, students who read more than 5 books participated in the MCBA Party at Leverett Elementary School. It was an evening filled with fun, food and excitement! Congratulations to all participants and a big thank you to Ms. L and the SES teachers that help make this a special tradition at our school.

Due to the spring-like weather and the want to boost our school spirit before testing begins, Student Council is sponsoring “Spirit Week” next week! Each day of the week will have a special theme. Students and staff (and parents!) are invited to dress and participate in each special day. At the assembly last Friday, Student Council wore examples of each special day for the students to see, so many students already have an idea of what they could wear/bring. Please reference the Spirit Schedule below:

Spirit Day Schedule- Week of 3/16-3/20

Monday 3/16

Crazy Hat Day

Tuesday 3/17

Clash Day/ Mix- Up Day

Wednesday 3/18

Fancy Day (dress up!)

Thursday 3/19

Bring Your Favorite Stuffed Friend to School Day

Friday 3/20

School Color/School Spirit Day (Maroon and Gold/ Moose)

Next Monday, March 16th, is Kindergarten Orientation Day from 9:00am-11:00am.  We will welcome next year’s class and their parents/guardians to learn about Kindergarten at SES. Current Kindergarteners will not attend school on the 16th  (They can wear their crazy hat on the 19th and bring their stuffed friend too!).

Next week will also include a field trip for Grades K-2 to the UMASS Fine Arts Center to see a performance and a School Committee meeting on the 19th and a special Irish Step dancing performance by The Duffy Academy of Irish Dance at our assembly on Friday. SES community member and parent, Alicia Olanyk and her SES students will demonstrate some dancing!

Enjoy the weekend!

5th Annual Daffodil Fun Run 5K Run & Walk to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters: I wanted to reach out to Shutesbury Elementary and invite you to our upcoming 5th Annual Daffodil Fun Run! The race is a 5k (run / walk) race through Amherst that raises funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hampshire County. It’s such an exciting community event and a great way to welcome the warm spring weather with the Daffodils being in full bloom!
Last year the event raised over $45,000 to support Big Brothers Big Sisters - and we are hoping to top that this year with a goal of over 1,000 runners and walkers - making our goal this year $50,000!

With Shutesbury having such a big impact on the community, you can truly change the lives of our most at-risk youth.
You can find further information and register here:https://www.runreg.com/5420.

Calling all Wild Hearted Boys and Girls!
We are running an adventure week during April vacation - the 20th through the 24th and would love some local Shutesbury youth to join us.
Two parallel, single gender adventures that include nature connection, hiking, rock climbing, caving and paddling. Your child will have a chance to explore, inquire, play, reflect and dialogue in the context of the natural world. They will experience new things, make connections with others and be a vital part of a team in an environment full of curiosity and wonder.  Same gender instructors provide mentorship and facilitate a challenging and supportive environment.
Ages 9 - 13.  Convenient 9 am drop off and 4 pm pick up at Mill River Recreation Area in Amherst. See the Wild Hearted Programs tab at our website: www.AdventureinAdventureout.com  or call Pandora at 413-253-4910 .
