March 22, 2018

Dear Moose,

As March is winding down (crazy to think about!), we have our MCAS testing dates planned. The dates of testing are listed in this RTN for your review. The amount of testing sessions is much less than the previous years. Students in grades 4, 5 and 6 will take the tests on the computer. Grade 3 will take the test on paper. Next year the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education requires all grades to test electronically.

We have some snacks to offer students during testing days. However, we are hoping that families are willing to donate healthy treats for students. If you are willing to donate a snack for a grade, please let Jessica or me know.

This Friday March 23rd is a teacher Curriculum Day, so students do not have school. As of now, the last day of school for students is Monday June 25th

We continue family conferences next week on Tuesday and WednesdayTuesday March 27th is a 1:00 dismissal to accommodate this.

I encourage families to attend our first STEM night on Thursday March 29th. Magnificent PTO members Katie McLaughlin, Carrie Hawkins, and Mary King have collaborated with SES staff members Polly Wagner, Debbie Lee and Heather Lobenstine and consulted with Shutesbury Librarian Maryanne Antonellis to create this fun event. The night will have a design and engineering focus and have some hands on activities! Please come!

Enjoy the weekend!

Jackie

DITCH THE WORKOUT, JOIN THE PARTY!

A Zumba class run by Shutesbury Elementary School’s own Susan Kahn (certified Zumba instructor) will be held in the SES gym on Thursdays from 3:30-4:30pm beginning on Thursday, March 8.  Free class!  Donations accepted to benefit the Shutesbury PTO!

ZUMBA

Dance fitness classes that are fun, energetic, and make you feel amazing!

Perfect For

Everybody and every body! Each Zumba® class is designed to bring people together to sweat it out.

HOW IT WORKS

We take the "work" out of workout, by mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party. Once the Latin and World rhythms take over, you'll see why Zumba® Fitness classes are often called exercise in disguise. Super effective? Check. Super fun? Check and check.

BENEFITS

A total workout, combining all elements of fitness – cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility, boosted energy and a serious dose of awesome each time you leave class.

WHAT TO WEAR

For this one-hour cardio jam session, wear whatever makes you comfortable for movement. Yoga pants, leggings, sweats, etc. work for bottoms and t-shirts, tanks work for tops. Shoes vary---some prefer tennis shoes, some bring dance sneakers, others like to go barefoot.

And here's a link to a video that captures just some of the fun we have! Every class is unique, but it's always a good time!

Join Multi-Arts on a time traveling theatrical adventure!

This latest installment of Time Traveling Stories takes us on a journey to the 1840’s! When young Justine is sent back in time, she meets Angeline Palmer, a brave African American girl who was saved from slavery with the help of the town. Learn the true story of Angeline and discover the roots of what makes Amherst such a unique place: our avant-garde spirit, celebration of differences, and ability to come together as a community to stand up for human rights.

The new play is written by Maia Kinney-Petrucha, an Amherst High School and Hampshire College Alum, and features fellow Amherst High alum Haley Parker, and Wildwood Elementary students Violent and Lena Ennis.

Come hear a staged reading of the script at Barnes and Noble in Hadley on March 24th at 2 pm!
