Dear Moose,

Well, winter is hanging on with all its might. We have our eye on some winter weather forecasted for next week. We are really hoping that it turns out to be nothing! As of now, the last day of school for students is Monday June 25th.

Thank you to the many families that participated in the PTO sponsored Bertucci's night on Monday! It was a success and the PTO will let us know soon how much money was raised for the school.

Looking ahead, on Thursday March 29th the PTO is hosting a STEM night at SES! Students will be invited to participate in a fun and exciting building/engineering task! Mark your calendars!

Next week dancers from the Duffy Academy of Irish Dance will come and perform for the students and staff on Tuesday. Also, there is no school for students on Friday the 23rd, as the teachers will gather for Professional Development.

This week in our country, state and school we witnessed students using their voices and demonstrating leadership. I am constantly reminded of how important and vital schools and education are to our society. Our students at SES are certainly amazing, intelligent, compassionate and thoughtful leaders.

" Let us remember: one book, one pen, one child and one teacher can change the world.” ~Malala Yousafzai

***SCHOOL NEWS***

Dear Parents:

Please consider joining me as part of a Parent / Professional Leadership in Education team from our Erving School Union #28.  Please contact me by April 1, 2018 at [email protected] if you are interested in this opportunity.

Prudence Marsh, Director of Student Support

2 day training on family leadership:

Talk with your SEPAC leaders and commit to bringing a team to our Advancing Parent / Professional Leadership in Education (APPLE) Institute this spring – a two-day free training on May 3 and 4 in Framingham.  It is a great way to help parents develop leadership skills, network with other district teams, and develop a customized district action plan for increased family engagement.

Developing a better working relationship with your SEPAC can:

·       help make positive things happen in your district,

·       increase family engagement which supports student success,

·       identify and address issues in your community,

·       build a professional collaborative partnership; and

·       move your special education program forward.

Please click the following link to review the APPLE Institute flyer .

Spring will be here before we know it, plan now to join us in May!

***MOOSE INTERVIEW OF THE WEEK***

Mackenzie from 5th Grade!

MK

JCB:  What is your favorite thing to do at school?
MK:  Go to recess; throw snowballs at Zach and Sam.  Luc does it too.

JCB:  What is your favorite food?
MK:  Pizza with pepperoni (vegetarian), black olives and red onions.  I usually get it from Papa Gino’s but it [Papa Gino’s] doesn’t have my favorite type.

JCB:  What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?
MK:  Read with my cat, Lili.

JCB:  If you could be any animal what animal would you be and why?
MK:  A cat because they’re really cute.

JCB:  What are you most looking forward to in 6th grade?
MK:  Going to Boston!

JCB:  Is there anything else you’d like the Shutesbury community to know about you or is there anything special about you?
MK:  I’ve lived in Kansas.  I’ve lived in Gardner (This is my 2nd time in the same house with the same bed). I’ve lived in Italy and I was originally born in California, but we moved when I was 3 months.

JCB:  What was your favorite place to live?
MK:  Italy for two reasons – I had the most friends there and I lived there the longest.

DITCH THE WORKOUT, JOIN THE PARTY!

A Zumba class run by Shutesbury Elementary School’s own Susan Kahn (certified Zumba instructor) will be held in the SES gym on Thursdays from 3:30-4:30pm beginning on Thursday, March 8.  Free class!  Donations accepted to benefit the Shutesbury PTO!

ZUMBA

Dance fitness classes that are fun, energetic, and make you feel amazing!

Perfect For

Everybody and every body! Each Zumba® class is designed to bring people together to sweat it out.

HOW IT WORKS

We take the "work" out of workout, by mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party. Once the Latin and World rhythms take over, you'll see why Zumba® Fitness classes are often called exercise in disguise. Super effective? Check. Super fun? Check and check.

BENEFITS

A total workout, combining all elements of fitness – cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility, boosted energy and a serious dose of awesome each time you leave class.

WHAT TO WEAR

For this one-hour cardio jam session, wear whatever makes you comfortable for movement. Yoga pants, leggings, sweats, etc. work for bottoms and t-shirts, tanks work for tops. Shoes vary---some prefer tennis shoes, some bring dance sneakers, others like to go barefoot.

And here's a link to a video that captures just some of the fun we have! Every class is unique, but it's always a good time!

Join Multi-Arts on a time traveling theatrical adventure!

This latest installment of Time Traveling Stories takes us on a journey to the 1840’s! When young Justine is sent back in time, she meets Angeline Palmer, a brave African American girl who was saved from slavery with the help of the town. Learn the true story of Angeline and discover the roots of what makes Amherst such a unique place: our avant-garde spirit, celebration of differences, and ability to come together as a community to stand up for human rights.

The new play is written by Maia Kinney-Petrucha, an Amherst High School and Hampshire College Alum, and features fellow Amherst High alum Haley Parker, and Wildwood Elementary students Violent and Lena Ennis.

Come hear a staged reading of the script at Barnes and Noble in Hadley on March 24th at 2 pm!
