Hello Moose!

Now that we are in to March and the warm weather is upon us (although not so much today!) SES is kicking into high gear!  We have a lot of exciting upcoming fundraisers, parties and performances (see the Dates to Remember section of this Roadtown News).

We are in the thick of mud season here, so please send appropriate outdoor clothing to school (extra clothes might be useful, as well, for the younger grades).  If your child has borrowed SES clothing, please make sure to wash and send back quickly as we have a limited supply of these extra items.

On Wednesday students in grades 4-6 participating in MCBA participated in the Battle of the Books! We had some fabulous teams and Ms. L organized the student created questions with great skill! All of the teams did very well but we did have a sixth grade winning team and a 4th grade team right behind them in 2nd place! Amazing! Please see the pictures of the winning teams below! Thanks to students, teachers and parents who support this tradition. The Books in Action party for students who have read 5 or more books happens Friday March 9th in Leverett!

Daylight Savings Time begins on March 11.  It will be great to have longer amounts of sunlight in the evenings!

***MOOSE ON THE MOVE NEWS***

The Moose on the Move Running/Walking Club has been meeting despite the cold and wet weather through the months of January and February!  Congrats and kudos to the students who have still been moving with us.  All of these students will be recognized at the next assembly on Friday, March 9:

Mie Piner – 35 mile milestone!

Elodie Warwick – 10 mile milestone!

Many other students are close to their next milestone (10, 25 or 35 miles) so if they work hard at the track, we’ll be recognizing even more students at assembly on Friday, March 9!  Stay tuned for more info on the next Moose on the Move session in March …

Ditch the Workout, Join the Party!

A Zumba class run by Shutesbury Elementary School’s own Susan Kahn (certified Zumba instructor) will be held in the SES gym on Thursdays from 3:30-4:30pm beginning on March 8.  Free class!  Donations accepted to benefit the Shutesbury PTO!

ZUMBA
Dance fitness classes that are fun, energetic, and make you feel amazing!
Perfect For
Everybody and every body! Each Zumba® class is designed to bring people together to sweat it on.
How It Works
We take the "work" out of workout, by mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party. Once the Latin and World rhythms take over, you'll see why Zumba® Fitness classes are often called exercise in disguise. Super effective? Check. Super fun? Check and check.
Benefits
A total workout, combining all elements of fitness – cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility, boosted energy and a serious dose of awesome each time you leave class.
And here's a link to a video that captures just some of the fun we have! Every class is unique, but it's always a good time!

***COMMUNITY MOOSE INTERVIEW OF THE MONTH***

Police Chief, Tom Harding - Interviewed by 4th Grader, Mia Boulanger

TH

MB:  Do you have any secret talents or hobbies?
TH:  If I told you it wouldn’t be a secret.  I do can stuff with cans.  So I take old cans and I have a lot of old bicycle parts and I put them together.

MB:  What have you liked about working in a small town like Shutesbury?
TH:  I have a lot of time to talk to people at the school or people who need help.  It’s slower here [in Shutesbury].  Like Amherst would be busy all the time, so I like that there’s time to talk.

MB:  Do you remember your 4th grade teacher and do you have a funny story about 4th grade?
TH:  My 4th grade teacher was named Mrs. Dandelion.  My grandmother owned a candy store and I lived 2 doors away from the school.  So I wanted to make friends and impress people so I brought in 2 big bags of candy on the first day, and Mrs. Dandelion was not impressed.

MB:  If you were in a band, what instrument would you want to play and why?
TH:  I was in a band in 4th grade through high school and I played guitar and piano.

MB:  What is the first thing you’ll do when you retire?
TH:  I will probably burn my snow shovels and give away my cold weather clothes.  We’re moving to a warmer climate and trying it for a year.

MB:  What do you do when you’re not working?
TH:  I like to ride a bike a lot.  I read a lot.  I write a little.

MB:  What are your favorite meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner and what’s your favorite dessert?
TH:  Desserts easy – anything chocolate.  My favorite breakfast - biscuits and sausage gravy with chicken fried steak.  For lunch I like bacon cheeseburger club sandwiches.  Dinner?  My wife makes great enchiladas.

MB:  Do you have any pets?
TH:  I don’t have any pets at the moment.  Our dog and our cat both went on to animal heaven.  When we move we’re going to get another dog.  I like Labrador retrievers.

Dear Shutesbury Elementary School Parents and Guardians,

Please join Amherst Education Foundation as we celebrate Shutesbury’s very own Jackie Mendonsa and the other principals of our public schools: Mark Jackson, David Slovin, Patty Bode, Diane Chamberlain, Derek Shea, Lisa Desjarlais, and Margot Lacey.

AEF is a 24-year-old nonprofit organization that gives approximately $30,000 in grants to our public schools each year.  Over the years, Shutesbury students have benefited from our grants through teacher training, a Robotics program, Science resources in the libraries, and numerous enhancements in the middle and high schools where AEF grants have purchased biology equipment, music technology, physical education equipment, and more.

Every spring, we celebrate “Champions for our Schools” at a fun gala featuring the ARHS jazz band, trivia, and delicious food and drink.

Tickets are $50 each or reserve a table in a prime location for you and nine special friends for $60 per person.

Saturday, March 17, 2018
6:00 - 9:00 pm
UMass Student Union Ballroom

Tickets are on sale now! Can't make it on the 17th? We will miss you! You can still participate by sending a message to your favorite principals. Click here for tickets and more information: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/aef-celebrates-champions-for-our-schools-tickets-41920686903

All proceeds from the event will go to AEF and the grants we give to educators.

We hope to see you there!
