Principal’s Message:

12/5/14

Dear SES,

Happy December to all of you! There is a LOT happening in our school. This week’s letter will be FULL of information! Please read closely!

Artist-in Residence
Our artists in residence (Anna Sobel and Melissa Redwin from Enchanted Circle Theater) have begun their classroom workshops with the students! Students will participate in 5 classroom workshops to develop an “act” using the Ray Bradbury book “ Switch on the Night” as inspiration. There will be puppets, singing, acting and dancing! Below find some information that families need to know.

Costumes: All students will need to wear a “dark” outfit. Black or navy blue pants and shirts are needed. Plain/solid shirts and pants are preferred. Shirts can be worn inside out to help with this, if necessary.

Dress Rehearsal: We will have a daytime dress rehearsal on December 17th at 10:00 am. Family members are invited to watch the dress rehearsal if they can’t make the nighttime show. Students will need to have their “costumes” at this rehearsal.

Night Performance: The whole school night performance will happen on Wednesday, December 17th at 6:30 pm in the gymnasium/theater. Students will be expected to arrive at 6:15 in their black or navy blue “costume”.

**Set Help: We are looking for donations of stringed white lights, lanterns (all types) and battery-operated candles. If you have any of these items, please drop them off in the office with Jessica. Please consider helping!**

Mascot Voting
The Student Council has narrowed down the many suggestions for our school mascot. The next step is to open up voting to the school and the community. Students, families and community members are invited to come to the school to vote for the school mascot from Monday, December 8th- Friday December 12th. If you are a family or community member, you can come into the front office to vote. Students will vote in classrooms. The final choices are: Falcons, Wolves, Owls, Moose, Mighty Oaks, and Wyola Lakers. Please come and vote!

Thanks for your support,

Jackie Mendonsa, Principal

SES Student Interview of the Week!

SAM!

JM: What do you love about SES?

SW: I like recess and art. I like art because you can do all these cool projects. Like we are doing a project on bats, and we are learning about bats with Ms. Culbreth too.

JM: What do you like to do in your free time?

SW: I love to play outside. I like to roll giant snowballs. I like to play with my toys and watch movies. I also like to eat my mom’s apple pie.

JM: What is your favorite food?

SW: I like hamburgers and fries! Yummy!

***SCHOOL NEWS***

COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION WEEK:  According to Code.org, 15 million students worldwide participated in an Hour of Code during just one week last year. This year computer science educators are aiming to involve 100 million students in the Hour of Code by the end of 2014!

All four schools in Union 28 are participating in the Hour of Code during Computer Science Education Week, December 8-14. At SES, our 5th and 6th graders have been studying coding throughout the fall. They will share games and stories that they’ve created (using Scratch and Java Script) as well as Lego robots that they’ve programmed. They will also guide their kindergarten and first grade buddies through a series of early programming activities on and offline. Students in grades 2-4 will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of coding tutorials that emphasize problem solving and creativity.

If you’d like to get a sneak peek, go to Code.org for activities, related links, and more information. We hope all of our students are inspired and empowered to keep learning computer science!

***PTO NEWS***

Hello Shutesbury Elementary School community,
We have a new tool for signing up to volunteer for PTO events and fundraisers. Please see in your email a signup request from Signup Genius. This will be the new format we use when requesting volunteer time from our community. We are excited to try it out. Please open the email and simply “signup” for our test of this program. This way, we will all become familiar with this program and I can see that it works!
Be on the lookout for Signup Genius emails throughout the year as we approach various community events and fundraisers.
If you have any questions please contact me!
Thank you all ahead of time for the gifts you give to our children and our community. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful group of parents, students and teachers to call our own.
May this year be a great one,

Sarah Ettelman
PTO co-president
