Principal’s Message:

October 3, 2014

Dear SES Community

Happy October to all of you!  It has been a wonderful week at SES!  Classrooms are filled with learning, discussions and activities.  Picture day was a success and grades 5&6 were able to travel to an apple orchard.

We hope that all families attend our PTO sponsored Harvest Potluck Dinner on Friday evening.  Bring your favorite dish to share!  The event starts at 6:00 pm in the SES gym.  There will be contra-dancing afterwards.  We look forward to sharing a meal and cutting a rug with all of you.

All instrumental music lessons have started and the staff and students are enjoying the process!  It is so wonderful to hear the music filling the hallways.  Music can have such a profound influence on our lives, and we are lucky to have this opportunity in our school.

Looking ahead at SES, the “Apple Store” (apple as in the food, not the electronics) fundraiser for 5/6 will take place in the library on October 7th and 8th.  All students are able to purchase tasty treats from the apples that 5/6 have collected on their apple orchard trip.  Our SES book fair will happen Tuesday October 14 through Friday October 17th.

As always, please reach out to me whenever it is needed.

Jackie Mendonsa, Principal

*ATTENTION PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF 3RD- 6TH GRADE GIRLS!!
Bring a team of girls to learn how to build and program LEGO robots while participating in a research project!
Date: November 8, 2014
Location: Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center, Holyoke
Age range for girl team members: 8 to 13
Coach Compensation: $125.00
We’re looking for several adult chaperones who can each bring a team of three girls to a special Girls Connect research event. Extremely popular in recent years, Girls Connect is an all-girl introduction to FIRST LEGO League. The girls will learn how to build and program LEGO robots to do real-world tasks, enjoy a friendly competition, and receive awards for their hard work.
During the special Girls Connect research event, researchers from the UMass Amherst College of Education will conduct a study of girls’ collaborative problem solving, as well as girls’ attitudes towards themselves when engaged in challenging activities. There will be video and audio taping of the teams. The research is aimed at better engaging girls in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) related topics; this research study is funded by the National Science Foundation.
Teams should consist of girls who have not previously attended a Girls Connect event. In order to participate, parental consent and student assent for research participation must be provided.
Questions: Contact Kevin Keith, [email protected]
