NO SCHOOL, CURRICULUM DAY

October 6, 2017

Dear Moose,

October has arrived! This week the 5th and 6th graders enjoyed a walking field trip to a local apple orchard. Their families baked some delicious treats from the apples picked on the trip. These treats were sold at the annual "Apple Store" today. Thank you to the families that supported the event by making baked goods and thank you to the families that bought the treats!

As you may have read in the email sent yesterday, SES is hosting a Walk-a Thon on our new track to benefit Puerto Rico relief efforts on October 15th from 10:00- 12:00. A pledge sheet was emailed to you, and one will also be sent home with your child (one is also attached to this RTN). We encourage students and families to participate in this fun event. The money collected is being donated to UNICEF. Every $28 dollars helps a family with a kit for basic hygiene and child health and wellbeing. While we encourage all students to attend, we do not encourage children to ask unknown neighbors or community members without adult supervision. We are super excited for this event and for the opportunity to help people in Puerto Rico. A special thank you to Jamie Donta and Sally Campbell Galman for the organization and facilitation of the event.

We do not have school on Monday. I hope that all families enjoy the long weekend. I believe Saturday and Sunday are predicted to be nearly perfect fall days. Wahoo! We look forward to seeing students on Tuesday.

***SCHOOL NEWS***

The Family Handbook is now updated and approved by the School Committee.  Please find this important piece of literature on our website at http://www.shutesburyschool.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server_3148017/File/Information/SES Family Handbook updated 2017-18.pdf.

The Book Fair is Coming!

Our Scholastic Book Fair brings to school a selection of fun, engaging, and affordable books. Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose their own books motivates them to read more. The book fair provides funds for our library and leadership opportunities for our 5th and 6th graders, too! In the spring, we will once again run a fair in conjunction with World Eye Books of Greenfield.

Book Fair Dates:          Monday, October 16th to Thursday, October 19th

Shopping Hours:         School hours each day, plus Wed. evening

Family Event:   Wednesday, October 18 from 5:30-7:30

PHYSICAL EDUCATION UPDATE!
While working on perseverance in the 6th and 4th grades we had different challenges for passing a hula hoop around. Check out the creative and physically demanding ways that our students came up with!

***PTO NEWS***

The SES PTO had its first formal meeting this week.  We were pleased to have some new members with us at the meeting and are looking forward to raising funds and growing community this year.  Items discussed included our budget for the year, where money will be allocated throughout the SES community, the student directory and ideas for potential fundraisers for the year ahead.  Some possibilities include themed community dinners at SES, something involving our new track, trivia and bingo nights at the Shutesbury Athletic Club, raffle baskets and several other ideas.  We always welcome ideas and participation from the community.  Our next meeting will be Thursday, October 26 at 6pm at SES.

Shutesbury Community. I want to remind you to take the time and clip out all those Boxtops!!! You can find them on tons of grocery items like Cheerios, Ziplocs, Scott paper towels, Cascadian Farms and Food Should Taste Good chips. Every ten we submit earns us $1 for our school. The last five years we have earned $200 per year through this program! That's $1000, so keep clipping. You can send in Boxtops with your student or drop them in the office. There is a huge jar. Let's fill it this year!

-Amber O'Brien and Tyler Schenck, boxtops co-ordinators : )

AIKIDO - WEDNESDAY NIGHTS - SHUTESBURY GYM

The Wendell Aikido Beginners class starts on Wednesday October 11 at the Shutesbury Elementary School gym at 5:30 - 6:30.

Aikido is a martial art.  The way (do) of harmonizing (ai) with the universal life force (ki).  Our emphasis is learning to move from our whole body center with ease.  Centered movement is characteristic of Aikido in response to another’s movement toward us.  Our centered movement creates a space to blend with and redirect the other person’s energy.  We also have a lot of fun moving individually and with each other!

In the one hour class we begin with warm-up stretches and Aikido movements and breathing.  Next is the Aikido movements with another class mate.  In this part of the class we learn how to direct our energy towards another and how to re-direct the energy of the other coming towards us.  Aikido movement is like a dance and you play both roles.  As we progress, we learn the art of falling and this is done at your own comfortable pace.

Come join us!  See how you feel with the natural movements of Aikido.  The first class is free.

This beginners class will be 5 weeks and is taught by Ria Windcaller, Sensei and Charles Gilliam, Sensei.  They have been teaching the Wendell Aikido classes for over 25 years.  For more information go to our website at WendellAikido.com
