Dear Moose Community,

It was truly delightful to see everyone at Open House on Wednesday night! Thank you to those who shared feedback on our new format. The feedback has been almost entirely positive! Please feel free to send your thoughts on the night and any suggestions for tweaking for next year. Thank you to those community members who spoke at our community meeting. Everyone's support on Wednesday night certainly filled my bucket.

The Moose-on-the-Move Club is a hit! We have over 20 students participating! Thank you to Jessica Carlson-Belanger for facilitating/organizing, to many teachers including Ms. Lee, Ms. Tyner, and Ms. S for supporting this endeavor, and to the many parents who have shown up to walk/run.  Mr. Carra will also be holding an extra Moose-on-the-Move session starting in a couple of weeks – Monday mornings from 8:00-8:30!  Look for the flyer to come home next week with this additional time and start date.

This weekend, we welcome October and hopefully the cooler weather. This month the 5/6 will go apple picking and there will be a Walking/Run-athon on October 15th to benefit the people of Puerto Rico. Thank you to Jamie Donta who spoke about this fundraiser at Open House. Please be on the look out for information sent by email and in backpacks early next week.

I hope you all enjoy a beautiful weekend,

Jackie

***SCHOOL NEWS***

The Book Fair is Coming!

Our Scholastic Book Fair brings to school a selection of fun, engaging, and affordable books. Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose their own books motivates them to read more. The book fair provides funds for our library and leadership opportunities for our 5th and 6th graders, too! In the spring, we will once again run a fair in conjunction with World Eye Books of Greenfield.

Book Fair Dates:      Monday, October 16th to Thursday, October 19th

Shopping Hours:     School hours each day, plus Wed. evening

Family Event:            Wednesday, October 26th from 5:30-7:30

PHYSICAL EDUCATION UPDATE!
We are in our cooperative games unit and practicing important team and life values (persistence, resilience, compromise, and questing skills). For the younger grades the values are never give up, being able to bounce back (from a negative feeling), blending ideas and asking can, or will questions.

Our games give us the opportunity to put these values to work and have them continuously challenged. As expected our students are stepping up, accomplishing the task at hand, all while building up our teammates. Some games include our Mighty Caterpillar activity, Rising Tide, and The Captain is Coming. I encourage families to ask how these games are played, and maybe give them a try too (of course with some modification for the home)! Happy 2017/2018 school year.

Have a super week,

Mr. Steven Carra

***PTO NEWS***

The SES PTO had its first formal meeting this week.  We were pleased to have some new members with us at the meeting and are looking forward to raising funds and growing community this year.  Items discussed included our budget for the year, where money will be allocated throughout the SES community, the student directory and ideas for potential fundraisers for the year ahead.  Some possibilities include themed community dinners at SES, something involving our new track, trivia and bingo nights at the Shutesbury Athletic Club, raffle baskets and several other ideas.  We always welcome ideas and participation from the community.  Our next meeting will be Thursday, October 26 at 6pm at SES.

Shutesbury Community. I want to remind you to take the time and clip out all those Boxtops!!! You can find them on tons of grocery items like Cheerios, Ziplocs, Scott paper towels, Cascadian Farms and Food Should Taste Good chips. Every ten we submit earns us $1 for our school. The last five years we have earned $200 per year through this program! That's $1000, so keep clipping. You can send in Boxtops with your student or drop them in the office. There is a huge jar. Let's fill it this year!

-Amber O'Brien and Tyler Schenck, boxtops co-ordinators :)

Common School Kicks Off 50th Anniversary Celebration

with Children’s Carnival

Amherst, MA - The Common School begins its yearlong celebration of its 50th anniversary with its largest Children's Carnival ever. This year’s carnival takes place on Saturday, October 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on the School’s campus at 521 South Pleasant Street in Amherst.

The Children’s Carnival is open to the public, with no admission fee and will feature several free activities and treats, including a magic show by Flippo the Juggling Clown; a performance by a Senegalese dancer Abdou Sarr; music by the EZ Band, the School’s student rock band; and a giant 50th anniversary cake. Breakfast, hearty lunches, and treats such as cotton candy, homemade baked goods and smoothies will also be available for purchase.

The Children’s Carnival is the first of a series of special events planned for the coming year to mark the 50th anniversary of The Common School and set the stage for the next 50 years of growth and achievement. The School, for children ages 3 to 12, was founded in 1967 by Emily Johnson, who invited the Amherst community to join her in “a challenging experiment in education” by creating a school that would foster curiosity, independence and a love of learning in children.

In the event of rain, the Children’s Carnival will be held indoors at Amherst Regional Middle School at 170 Chestnut Street.
