Principal’s Message:

Dear SES Community,

As the Autumn Equinox approaches (September 23rd), the crisp and cool weather has arrived and it is quite energizing and refreshing! It has been a busy week within the halls at SES. Grades 5 and 6 went on a team-building, ropes course adventure to Morse Hill on September 18th.  This experience enabled them to work together, build trusting relationships and encourage each other to tackle new situations!

It was so very wonderful to meet and speak with many SES families at Open House on the 17th!  The classroom discussions were well attended and intriguing. We met as a community in the gymnasium and I was able to review some of my plans and work at SES as well as introduce the School Committee, PTO and discuss School Council.

Today we say goodbye to Bernadette Marian, a para-educator at SES, who is leaving the district to take on a teaching position at the Curtis Blake School. We wish her the best of luck, and hope she comes and visits soon.

“Celebrate Shutesbury” takes place Saturday, September 20th! This wonderful event is filled with food, fun, games, prizes and even Bingo! The event is kicked-off with a bike parade starting from SES, and riding to the common at 10:00. The fun lasts from 10:00am-3:00pm on the town common. Please come!

We are actively looking for any and all volunteers to become part of the PTO. As we discussed on Wednesday night, your participation and assistance can look and be in any way that you can accommodate. We will work to update the PTO tab on the website with the activities and events that you can help with. In the meantime, you can contact the PTO at [email protected] or me with any questions or interest. PLEASE think about joining us!

Wishing you a weekend filled with fun and relaxation,

Sincerely,

Jackie Mendonsa

Principal

~If you are able to, please send in a box of tissues to supplement the school supply!

DID YOU KNOW: research demonstrates that under-nutrition can affect a child's behavior, school performance and overall cognitive development. Even when a child misses one meal, behavior and academic performances are affected. A hungry child has difficulty learning.

Come join us for breakfast

For a school age child, not eating breakfast can lead to fatigue and a diminished attention span. While the body adjusts to decreased blood sugar levels, the brain struggles to perform its function with a minimal supply of nutrients. Children up to the age of ten need to eat every four to six hours to maintain a blood sugar concentration

COORDINATED PROGRAM REVIEW

State education officials will visit Shutesbury Elementary School for a program review during the week of October 6, 2014.

During the routine visit, Special Education, Civil Rights, and English Learner Education programs will be evaluated to verify compliance with state and federal requirements.

The officials will interview administrators, teachers and staff, survey parents, and observe instructional spaces.

Anyone wishing to be interviewed by the officials regarding any of the areas of review should call the Superintendent’s Office at (413) 423-3337, no later than October 6th. They may also call the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education at (413) 314-6702. The interviews will take place within two weeks of completion of the onsite visit.

The Book Fair is Coming!

Our Scholastic Book Fair brings to school a wonderful selection of fun, engaging, and affordable books kids want to read. Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose their own books motivates them to read more. The Book Fair provides funds for our library, too!

Book Fair Dates:             Tuesday, October 15th to Friday, October 18th

Shopping Hours:             School hours each day, plus Wed. evening

Family Event:             Wednesday, October 16th from 5:30-7:30

**PTO NEWS**

*CELEBRATE SHUTESBURY – Saturday, September 20 10-3pm on the Town Common.  This year we are returning to the tradition of starting off the day with a bike parade from school, complete with fire trucks and police cars, and an opt in from the fire station for those who find the hill too long to climb.  This year’s parade theme is CLIMATE, and in the spirit of the Climate March in New York City we would like to make our own march here in Shutesbury!

The PTO will also be sponsoring games of BINGO during Celebrate Shutesbury!  If you are able to help, please contact Angela Regan at [email protected].

*Directory Update:

Thank you to all the families that have entered their child/ren's contact information for the directory.  If you have not already done so the deadline is Sunday, September 28th.  Go to the website http://ses-directory.org.  Please contact me with any questions. 413-253-8878
