Principal’s Message:

Dear SES Community,

Happy September! How interesting that September begins with the warmest temperatures of the summer!

It has been a great (short) week of learning at SES.  Chief Tibbets visited the school and we had a successful fire drill practice! Students are busy re-connecting with friends, practicing the rules and procedures of their classrooms and schedules and diving into learning.  Little by little I am committing names to memory and realizing sibling and family connections!  It is such a fabulous cohort of children.

Open House will take place on September 17th.  This event is for adults only and its purpose is to give parents/guardians a chance to see students’ classrooms, talk with teachers and understand the learning goals of specific grade levels. The schedule will go as follows:

6:00-6:30 Preschool Meeting (Pre-K room)

6:30-7:00 Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade classroom meetings

7:00-7:30 Whole school community gathering in gym (committee discussions etc.)

7:30-8:00 4th, 5th, 6th grade classroom meetings

I have been gradually riding each of the buses home with the students. I am doing this for several reasons. First, I am interested in the roads and neighborhoods of Shutesbury, as well as the ride length and amount of students on each route. Secondly, I am reviewing bus rules and behavior expectations to ensure that we begin our year with all students understanding the expectations of bus behavior. It has been very helpful to me in my quest to form a really big picture of the school, students and community.

Our second assembly of the year will occur on Friday the 5th. The schedule will then rotate to every other Friday afternoon from 2:30-3:00 (the next assembly will be the 19th!). The community is always welcome to come and join us in song and celebration.

As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me by phone or email with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Jackie Mendonsa

Principal

***SCHOOL NEWS***

*IMPORTANT SCHOOL REMINDERS:

~Please send back paperwork to the office if you have not done so already.  Enrollment forms, emergency cards, physicals, immunizations, and permissions for posting photos of children are helpful to our staff and, in the event of an emergency, your family!

~Please send in a yellow note if your child will be doing something different at the end of the day than they usually do.  This includes attending afterschool, going home on a different bus, or being picked up at any point throughout the day.

~Pick ups at the end of the school day will happen in the Conference Room.  Adults and students should enter the conference room and make sure the staff member in charge (usually Ms. Larson) knows that you are leaving.

**PTO NEWS**

*CELEBRATE SHUTESBURY – Saturday, September 20 10-3pm on the Town Common.  This year we are returning to the tradition of starting off the day with a bike parade from school, complete with fire trucks and police cars, and an opt in from the fire station for those who find the hill too long to climb.  This year’s parade theme is CLIMATE, and in the spirit of the Climate March in New York City we would like to make our own march here in Shutesbury!

The PTO will also be sponsoring games of BINGO during Celebrate Shutesbury!  If you are able to help, please contact Angela Regan at [email protected].  Donate your used toys, books and games for BINGO prizes.  Drop off items in the main office at school with Jessica.

*HELP NEEDED!!  If you are interested in being a room representative for your child’s classroom, please sign up during Open House on September 17th.  Room reps help to spread the word about PTO events!  We are also in need of a volunteer to keep up to date on PTO events and submit info periodically to the Roadtown News and on Facebook.  Email [email protected] if you are interested in any of these volunteer opportunities.

*TARGET RED CARDS:  We received a check this week for $114.81 from Target just for having Red Card holders register our school on their account.  If you don’t have a Target Red Card go to target.com and sign up for one.  5% off all purchases!  AND a percentage of your spending goes directly to SES!

*BOXTOPS! BOXTOPS! BOXTOPS!  Have you seen those boxtops for education symbols on your Nature Valley granola bars and Cheerios? Cut them out and send them to the school with your child! Every boxtop collected earns us a dime for our school.  It doesn't seem like much but they really do add up. You can send in boxtops any time of the year. There is a jar in the front office. However, we will be submitting our first wave of boxtops at the end of October.

Some products that contain boxtops are: Ziploc bags, Pillsbury baking mixes, Scott paper towels, Betty Crocker, Cheerios, Cascadian Farms, Juicy Juice and Green Giant Vegetables.

Keep your eyes peeled and clip your boxes before recycling.

Thanks, Amber O'Brien (SES boxtop coordinator)
