Vocabulary Costume Day

Dear Moose Community,

Our whole school has enjoyed the lovely autumn weather this week. The woods have been a busy place with students building fairy-houses and forts. Many students continue to play organized games during recess. The staff enjoy watching the students play in the beautiful weather. It is my favorite time of year.

I am very happy to announce that we will have a new school counselor for the year. Chelsea Dann will begin on October 20th. Chelsea is a licensed social worker and has been a counselor for children and families in various settings for years. Chelsea is delighted to begin working at SES. Chelsea's email address will be [email protected]. Feel free to reach out to schedule a time to talk to Chelsea if needed.

We will be holding our 3rd annual Vocabulary Costume Day on Friday October 28th. I have attached a letter to this Roadtown that details this event. All students will identify a vibrant and unique vocabulary word that they will dress up as. Students will need to have the word written and attached to their costume. Many students create these word cards in class. The point of this day is to teach others the meaning of your vocabulary word through costume. Costumes can be as elaborate or as simple as the student wants. For example, the student's word could be "Emerald" and they could dress in all green. PLEASE READ the attached letter, as there are some rules about costumes (such as no violent or scary costumes, masks, make-up or big props).

Looking ahead for the rest of the month we have several events to be aware of:

  • No school on October 10th (Indigenous Peoples' Day (Columbus Day))
  • School Council Meeting on October 11th at 3:30
  • Picture Day on October 19th
  • No school for students on October 21st (Curriculum Day)
  • Conferences October 26 & 27th and November 1st and 2nd

We will see everyone on Tuesday the 11th!

Best,

Jackie

MASSACHUSETTS STATE EMPLOYEE VOLUNTEER LEAVE:

Any state employees are eligible for a volunteer leave one day per month.  This is good news for our school as we look for extra lunch/recess coverage or library help from parents/guardians!  Here is a snippet from the UMass Employee Handbook:

"VOLUNTARY SERVICES LEAVE GUIDELINES
Section 31E of Chapter 29 of the Massachusetts General Laws authorizes state employees to volunteer up to one work day per month in a public school or school district. The following are intended to provide implementation guidelines for this program at the University of Massachusetts
ELIGIBILITY
All full time benefited employees who have been employed by the University for 6 months, have received acceptable performance evaluations and have received the approval of their supervisor are eligible."

Please check with your employer for more details.

***MOOSE INTERVIEW OF THE WEEK***

Brendon from 6th Grade!

 BT

JCB:  What are you looking forward to at school this year?
BT:  I’m looking forward to the end of the year.  The graduation kind of tradition thing.

JCB:  What do you like to do in your spare time?
BT:  At home I like to usually watch some TV or play outside and rarely go shopping or go out.

JCB:  If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, and only one thing, what would it be?
BT:  That would have to be…..pork.

JCB:  Are you reading anything interesting right now?
BT:  Yes, I am.  I’m reading World Records.

JCB:  What was the most interesting record you’ve read about so far?
BT:  Hanging someone’s selves by only their tongue!  They basically had a loop through their tongue and they held themselves up, not touching the ground.  Just hanging!  And it freaks me out a little.
