Thursday, January 21

School Committee Meeting – 7:00pm

Friday, January 29

All School Assembly – 2:30-3:00pm

January 15, 2016

Dear Moose,

Brrrrrrrrr! We’ve had a chilly week. Though we were toasty and warm in our cozy school for some great learning, it certainly was cold outside. Please remember to send your student to school with snow pants, gloves, hats and a winter jacket every day. If you need assistance with any of these items, please contact Dennise.

Today at assembly the State Fire Marshall’s office honored Jordan Goodhind (4th grade) for her quick and safe reaction to a fire in her home.  Jordan had just graduated from the S.A.F.E. program, a fire safety course taught to the 4th grade by local firefighters.  Great work, Jordan!

It’s hard to believe that we are halfway through January. Looking ahead, we do not have school on Monday in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. On Thursday there is a School Committee Meeting in the evening.

Because winter weather is making an appearance, I want to remind families about school closing and delay information. If school is closed or delayed due to weather the information will be communicated in several ways:

  1. On the website homepage (www. shutesburyschool.org)
  2. By a telephone message to those who have signed up for it
  3. On TV/Radio- listed under “Erving School Union 28”—NOT Shutesbury or Amherst!

Have a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious weekend,

Jackie

*Super Sitter Babysitter Training Course:  Last Saturday many of the sixth graders from Shutesbury Elementary School attended a babysitter training at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.  Some of them wrote short articles about the experience.  Here are some excerpts:

Jack:  On Saturday I went to a babysitting class called Super SitterSuper Sitter teaches you what to do in situations with just you and the kid.  Like for instance, if the kid you’re sitting gets stung by a bee, you swipe it away wit a card quickly then put ice on it, and wait to see if there’s a lot of swelling or a rash.  That is just 1 of the 50 things I learned at Super Sitter.  I think Super Sitter was a very good opportunity for me.

Sylvia:  On Saturday, I went to the babysitting class.  Some of it was babysitting stuff but most of it was first aid.  We learned how to do chest compressions and how to know when someone’s having a stroke.

Sasha:  What I learned at Super Sitters is:  C.P.R.  It’s a good thing to know, but it’s not fun when you’re doing C.P.R. on a mannequin.  I also learned C.P.R. for babies!

Natalia:  …The first part of the course we went over a little handbook we each got about babysitting.  Then, the instructor broke us into teams and then asked each team what they would do in a certain scenario….  We also talked a lot about when to call 911 and when to call a parent….  In the second part of the day we learned how to change diapers.  We also, and more importantly, learned C.P.R. for babies, and children, and adults.  At the end of the day, we talked about what we had learned and got a certificate saying we had successfully completed the course.
