December 11, 2015

Dear Moose,

Are you ready to experience a spectacular presentation of “The Last Winter”? Our school has been bustling with energy and dancing as we prepare for our production on Wednesday December 16th at 10 am and 7pm.  It is expected that all SES students attend both performances. If for some reason your student is not attending, please communicate that to their classroom teacher, as their class is reliant on their participation in the performance. A flyer and email were both sent home this week, and the flyer has been attached to this RTN for your reference. There are particular costume (clothing color) requirements that have been communicated through the classroom teacher and the email from Jessica yesterday. The Massachusetts Cultural Council and our fabulous PTO have made this fabulous Artist-in-Residence experience possible. Thank you! We are so excited to see you at our “Winter Wonderland” in the SES gym on Wednesday.

We have been concerned for the safety of our students during drop-off in the morning. If you are dropping your child of by car, please drop them off at the front door. Some students have been crossing the parking lot alone. Because of the busses and cars moving about, we want to ensure everyone’s safety.

In the week ahead, aside from our fabulous performance, we have a School Committee meeting on the 17th and Grades Pre-K- 2nd grade will have a Winter Craft Day on the 18th. Our last day of school before the break is Wednesday, December 23rd. We will then enjoy a week and a half off and return to school on Monday, January 4, 2016!

Please consider purchasing an SES Moose T-Shirt! We still have some available! Please stop by the office for an additional order form.

See you on Wednesday for the show!

Jackie

Moose Interview of the Week!

Nikos from PreK/K!

JM: What do you love about our school?

NK: I love that the school donates stuff to people. And the school orders good stuff for children, like the T-Shirts. That’s what I think.

JM: What do you want to be when you grow up?

NK: I want to be a fireman because when fires start I want to help them put it out. I want to help people.  Did you know that if a fire starts in your house and the alarm goes off and then the firemen come and put out the fire?

JM: What are you enjoying about Kindergarten?

NK: I have a lot of new friends. During language arts I like to draw pictures about the sounds I hear. I also like to play board games.

JM: What is your favorite food?

NK: Calzone. Because there’s a lot of pepperoni in the middle. I love pepperoni.

JM: What do you like to do in your free time?

NK: I like to build Lego sets. I also play with my family.

***MOOSE CAFÉ RECIPE OF THE MONTH***

~POPOVERS~

From King Arthur Flour Baker’s Companion

Chef Gail makes these for SES breakfast and they are a huge hit!  Try making them with your family over the Winter Break!!

3 large eggs

1 ½ cups whole milk

scant 1 ½ cups unbleached all-purpose flour

½ teaspoon salt

¼ cup unsalted butter, melted

1 teaspoon dried mixed herbs (optional)

Preheat the oven to 450°

Place all of the ingredients in a blender in the order indicated above.  Blend for 30 seconds, stopping midway through to scrape down the sides of the blender.  Allow the batter to rest for 15 minutes.

Using solid shortening or a nonstick vegetable oil spray, thoroughly grease 12 muffin cups (or 6 popover or 12 mini-popover cups).  Be sure to grease the area around the cups as well as the cups themselves.  Fill the cups about two-thirds full with the batter.  Bake for 20 minutes, then reduce the oven to 350°F and bake for an additional 10 minutes.  Resist the urge to open the oven door at any time during this process.  Remove the baked popovers from the oven, pierce the tops with a knife, and allow them to cool in the pan for 5 minutes.  Then gently turn them out of the pan onto a wire rack.  Serve warm.  Chef Gail serves them with jelly and butter.  Yum!

Billion Mile Race Grant – Our school was awarded a $500 grant through the Billion Mile Race Grant to construct a track in our upper field!!  Last year the 4th grade participated in the 100 Mile Club as part of this organization, attempting to walk/run 100 miles during the school year (that’s approximately 3 miles per week).  Hopefully with our new track we can incorporate more students and staff and hit that 100 mile mark!  Any parent/guardian interested in helping with a Community Preservation Grant application (due January 15) for the same project can contact Jessica at [email protected].  Thank you!

School Picture Retakes – Friday, December 18.  If you need a new order form, please contact Jessica or Martina in the office – [email protected] or [email protected].
