October 16, 2015

Dear Moose,

It has been a whirlwind of a week. Grades 5 and 6 supplied us with a delicious “Apple Store” on Tuesday and Wednesday. They raised almost $400.00 for their field trips and activities for the year! Thanks to all the families who helped to bake, or purchased some treats. On Thursday, Grade 3 traveled to Amherst Cinema and participated in the Hear-See-Feel Program. The feedback from the teachers and students was that it was a phenomenal experience. The third graders also went to the Beneski Natural History Museum in the afternoon.  Grades 4, 5 and 6 traveled to UMASS Friday morning to see the Multi Bands Concert. They were even able to see Ms. Chris’s Color Guard perform! We are so very fortunate to have these enriching field trips and experiences for our students.

Next week, students do not have school on Friday, October 23rd, as it is a teacher curriculum day.  Next week, our Book Fair also begins! Ms. L, our wonderful librarian, has been planning and preparing for the event. The evening Family Book Fair event will take place on Wednesday October 21st from 5:30-7:30. Students can also purchase books during the school day during next week. The book fair helps us raise money to purchase engaging and high-interest books for our library and classrooms..

The Shutesbury School Committee meeting was rescheduled to Thursday, October 22nd at 7:00 PM. The School Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, October 27th.

This is a reminder that our Vocabulary Costume Day will take place on October 30th. We will re-attach the letter outlining this day to the Roadtown. Students will brainstorm with teachers some vivid words to illustrate through costume. Students will be invited to dress as their word on October 30th, and become walking dictionaries. Please reference my letter for details.

It is getting chilly out. I think we will have to turn on the heat at school soon!!

Have a great weekend,

Jackie Mendonsa

Moose Interview of the Week

Anastasia from 5th Grade!

JM: What do you love about SES?

AG: Definitely the teachers, because they are all so nice and I like the way they teach. I think that writing is probably my favorite subject. I like telling stories about myself, and made up stories.

JM: What do you want to be when you grow up?

AG: Probably a fashion designer for clothes.

JM: What are you enjoying about 5th grade?

AG: Right now we are learning about characters, and really looking at what you can learn about them or what they are feeling. I’m currently reading The Legend of the Ghost Dog and Because of Winn Dixie.

JM: If you could eat any kind of food for the rest of your life what would it be?

AG: Pizza. Pepperoni.

HALLOWEEN CANDY DONATIONS NEEDED! Due to the fact that ALL trick-or-treating in Shutesbury happens along Leverett Road on Halloween night, these families get inundated with trick-or-treaters.  We have decided to donate back to these homes so that there is no financial burden on the families that make Halloween so special for all of our children.  Bags of sealed candy will be collected in the Main Office at Shutesbury Elementary School and at the MN Spear Library from now until Oct. 30.  Please consider donating!

Please bring your insurance and/or Medicare cards; no one will be turned away for lack of an insurance card, but it's really helpful if the town can be reimbursed.

We are still seeking volunteers to staff triage and to give vaccinations.  A modest honorarium is available for nurse vaccinators.  Call 259 2122 or email [email protected]
