Return to School!

Dear Moose Community,

We had a surprise 4-day week at school due to the snow/weather. We also had some very chilly weather mid week. We sent a reminder email regarding necessary outdoor attire for recess play. All students need a coat and hat (and preferably gloves) to play outside. To play in the snow, all students need a coat, hat, gloves, waterproof boots and snow pants. We play outside unless the temperature is under 12 degrees. We also take the wind chill into consideration. Though we try to have students play outside everyday, if it is dangerously cold, we have indoor recess.

Next week Marilyn Sylla will be coming to SES as our Artist in Residence. Students will participate in classes in percussion from Monday-Thursday. On December 21st (Thursday evening), students will perform some of what they have learned from 6:00-7:00 for families. We are thrilled to have the students and staff work with Marilyn!

Grades 5 and 6 went on a field trip to see Wonder in the movie theater. This was a book that many students read last year during the MCBA season!

Next week we will have a 1:00 dismissal on Friday December 22nd.

Stay warm and see you on Thursday December 21st at 6:00 for the Artist in Residence showcase!

Jackie

IM

JCB:  What is your favorite thing to do at school?
IM:  Castle.  Well, someone pretends to be a princess and a queen, not really a king.   And then they do whatever the queen says!

JCB:  What is your favorite food?
IM:  Blueberries.

JCB:  What is your favorite thing to do at home?
IM:  Watch TV.

JCB:  What’s your favorite show?
IM:  Octonauts – all kinds of creatures talking to each other and helping other creatures.

JCB:  If you could be any animal what animal would you be?
IM:  A unicorn ‘cause I’m magical like…make rainbows.

JCB:  Is there anything else you’d like the Shutesbury community to know about you?
IM:  I like unicorns because I’m a unicorn!

***PHYSICAL EDUCATION NEWS***

In PE, the K and 1 students have been practicing rolling balls of different sizes and textures. Then we progressed to self tossing, tossing and catching with a partner, and a crowd favorite of tossing into a basketball hoop. Ask at home about how we toss with our under alligator hand and what a perfect rainbow toss looks like.

Our older grades have started the winter invasion games unit. The first game is basketball. Students are exploring various types of passing and dribbling skills. Our focus is on passing first and keeping our head up! Each class can tell you the game happens out there on the court, not at our feet. Students have already tried to outrun a full court pass, broken down advanced dribbling skills, such as the cross, over into small steps, and (possibly most importantly to all invasion games) we have challenge by choice drills that encourage us to always move into open space on the court.

Our current value is confidence, from legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden's pyramid of success, "There is no stronger steel than well-founded belief in yourself." This value helps us to frame our basketball experience. Even the greatest NBA players of all time miss more shots then they make. So if you miss, like we all do, or toss up an air ball, as even the pros do who get paid millions of dollar, as a team we will say "Awesome, and keep moving forward." We know that our confidence is not based on a product from the outside, but something we create within.

Ask your children about the three-person weave, the square give and go, and how they create a confident mindset in class. Even better, ask them to show you what they are learning, even in the snow, or watch any invasion game on television together and see what you can teach each other. Enjoy a wonderful upcoming winter season.

All the best,

Mr. Carra
